Caring for
Shoes
It doesn’t matter how much you spend on a new pair
of shoes, it will all be in vain if you don’t give them proper care. Avoiding puddles is a give, but
there is a lot more to take into account in keeping your leather shoes in tip top condition.
By investing a little time in a care regime for your
shoes you can keep them not only looking great, but you can actually extend their
lifespan. Firstly, you need to brush off any dirt that has accumulated on top of the
shoe. Then,
you’ll need to use a quality cleaner to cleanse the leather. Some brands also include a
leather conditioner but if yours doesn’t, you’ll want to get your hands on a leather conditioner and smear
the entire area with a thin coat.
Wait for a few minutes, then wipe away the excess conditioner from the
shoe.

Next, you need to take out your leather polish and
rub it on with a rag. Wait for it to dry completely and, once it has, use a
fresh rag to buff the shoe and make it shine like a new penny. Finally,
apply a coating of leather protectant to avoid weathering of the leather then hey presto – you’re done.
It doesn’t take a lot of effort to keep your leather shoes in A1 condition, and by
investing a little time you’ll have them looking and feeling great for a long time to come.
Suede shoes require different treatment to
leather. There
are numerous products on the market specially designed to care for suede. Again, as part of a care regime for suede, you need to lightly brush the exterior to remove any
dust or dirt that has settled on top or become caught in the nap of the suede. Next, spray the shoe with suede
protector. To
remove any scuff marks from your suede shoes, use the brush, then brush back over so that the nap lies
flat. If you
have any stubborn marks on your suede shoes, try using a clean, white pencil eraser then brush over as before to
flatten the nap.

If you have dried mud on your shoes, try rubbing
them over with a nail brush to remove the debris. It’s much easier to do
this once the mud has dried completely. If your shoes have water splashes,
these could end up drying a different colour so it’s best to catch these whilst the shoe is still wet.
Blot off excess moisture with a sponge then wipe over the shoe to blend in any
obvious spots. In order to maintain the shape of your shoes, stuff white
tissue paper into the shoe. This is particularly useful with pointed-toe
shoes. It’s best to use white tissue as coloured tissue papers might
leach.
To store your shoes, wrap in white tissue paper and
place them back in the shoe box to keep the dust away. Avoid extremes of temperature –
too cold and the damp might get in; too hot and the natural moisture content of the leather may evaporate
causing your shoes to dry out and crack.
